LIVERPOOL REVENUE AND CUSTOMS STAFF
HAVE QUALIFICATIONS TO DECLARE!

Kevin Sutherland, Manager and Debbie Sweeney, Team Leader at Knowsley Community College with HMRC Staff

From September to Christmas, 2008, Knowsley Community College ran two Literacy classes and two Numeracy classes, with nine people in each class, at the HMRC Revenue and Customs Offices, Imperial Court, Liverpool.  The students took City & Guilds National Skills for Life qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy.

The College held initial meetings last summer to set up the link.  As a result of the first wave of successful learners another course with a further 36 students was set up from January, 2009, who will be sitting their exams at the end of April.  The third cohort of 36 learners will start their course after that, and there is already a waiting list for September!  This is in no small part down to the dedication of Andy Hannah, who is the Branch Learning Coordinator for PCS Union at HMRC.   The course was established under the auspices of Unionlearn, and is a prime example of good collaborative practice between Unions and local Colleges.

Course Tutor and Knowsley Community College Manager, Kevin Sutherland, said, “This has been a highly enjoyable and rewarding course for the participants and the tutor.  Some people had been out of education for 35 years and surprised themselves in the class!  They are now the proud holders of City & Guilds qualifications.”
